The new airport is being constructed because the existing one cannot meet the rising demands for travel and promote local tourism, provincial authorities have said.
The new 172-hectare Vung Tau Airport is used mainly for helicopters providing logistics and oil and gas services.
The overall investment, estimated at $1 billion, for the new 248.5 ha airport would come from selling old airport land or raised under the public-private partnership model. Project timetable is unclear.
The new airport will have capacity planned for 100,000 passengers and 500 tons of goods each year.
Go Gang is a small island in Long Son Commune, about three kilometers off Vung Tau beach town in southern Vietnam, and about 90 kilometers from HCMC. The island is also a tourist destination with stunning beaches and plentiful seafood options.
Apart from Vung Tau, the Province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau is home to the 16-island Con Dao Archipelago, a world renowned tourist attraction.
The archipelago has the Con Dao Airport, which was first designed for commercial use by the French in the 20th century and renovated in 2003.
The only airline that flies to Con Dao is Vietnam Air Services Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines. We operate regular Ho Chi Minh City flights.
There are currently 22 civilian airports in the country including 10 international ones. The Tan Son Nhat at HCMC and Noi Bai in Hanoi are the two largest airports in the country.
