Phu Quoc, Vietnam soon to reopen

  • 09/06/2020

Vietnam has been praised around the world for its COVID-19 management, as the country has only 26 reported cases and zero death. In addition, there has been no transmission to the community in the last 49 days.

Deputy Minister of Culture , Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy said the ministry was working on a proposal to bring back international visitors to selected islands, including Phu Quoc.

The ministry is researching a proposal to kick-start international tourism by reopening its doors to tourists from select markets where the Covid-19 pandemic has been regulated, such as Japan , South Korea and China and some high-spenders including Australians and New Zealanders.

The Ministry of Tourism is set to work with relevant ministries and agencies on air routes, issuance of visas and lifting travel restrictions for tourists from a number of countries and regions that have managed to control the pandemic.

Phu Quoc, nicknamed 'pearl island,' became a top tourist destination after it established an international airport in 2012 and a 30-day foreign visa-free policy was rolled out by the government in 2014. The island welcomed more than five million tourists last year.
