Pha That Luang

With an overall height of 147.6 feet, the majestic structure was built on three levels with a towering stupa surrounded by 30small stupas, all covered with gold leaf to show the kingdom's grandeur and splendour.Legend has it that the temple was built in the 3rd century as a Hindu temple to house the Lord Buddha's breastbone, but was reconstructed in the 13th century as a Khmer temple that was destroyed.Nevertheless, the stupa was destroyed again during the Siamese invasion and was rebuilt in the 1930s based on the original's sketches. Thus the stupa gives a stupendous insight into Laos history and culture. Illuminated at night, it's amazing seven times more.

Come in November, when the most famous Buddhist festival in Lao-the Boun That Luang Festival takes place in Vientiane, primarily at The That Luang, tourists will see throngs of pilgrims come to pay homage to the stupa. And vibrant events like the parade, live music and religious ceremony are held.
